About Modular Sculpture

Single parallelogram module. Distance between mounting faces 8", width 8.2"

Modular sculpture consists of identical individual units joined together. The number of units or modules may be varied and the relative orientation of individual units my be varied. Additionally, the assembly of modules may be mounted in a variety of orientations, from vertical to horizontal, depending on the requirements of a particular installation. Another variation would consist of arrays of modules, e.g. two or four 12X Small Helix assemblies mounted on a common base with the helices intertwining. This allows for a very large number of possible final sculptures and resulting esthetics.

Currently, the only work available is the Parallelogram Module Series. The individual modules (see picture above) consist of two side plates of a parallelogram profile joined by a 'Z' plate formed so that each plane of the 'Z' is at a right angle to the others. Both side plates and 'Z' plates contain cutouts to enhance the appearance and shadow profiles of the sculpture.

All modules are constructed from 10 gauge Cor-Ten steel (weathering steel) which is sheared (basic profiles), plasma cut (cutouts), punched (mounting holes), formed (bends), seam welded, welds ground flush and the assembly sand blasted to remove mill scale. Rusting is then initiated by a water spray over several days to create the patina. The initial bright orange color is likely to change slowly over time, most likely toward a dried blood rust color, although there is limited long term experience to base expectations upon.

Individual modules are joined together by four stainless steel studs with stainless Acorn nuts. Finished sculptures require a solid mounting point in most installations, either existing slab or wall or heavy freestanding base. Sculptures may be freestanding horizontally in natural repose, mounted vertically or mounted horizontally, projecting from a solid vertical surface. Some installations may require an angle adapter module to achieve the desired orientation.
